Example pages from inside the full rulebook

Jump between stars, explore dangerous worlds, battle pirates, loot salvage and fight off a race of killer robots humankind created. Interstellar corporations battle syndicates while a benevolent Imperium guards against humanity's greatest threat: itself.

Icar is a complete space opera roleplaying game set in the distant future. The dark backdrop of war against a robot race wages beyond the safety of a light jump net. There is no race or religeon, only two philosophies: those that believe in the natural evolution of humanity and those that believe in technological salvation.

This is a complete game! Everything you need to play beyond dice. Including all the rules you need to play, background, equipment, bionics rules, Scavenger setting with example missions, equipment lists, GM section with ideas on how to run a sandbox, character sheets, full index and lots more!

Thanks for your comment! It's D100 for skill checks and D10 for attribute checks.

Looks good! But i noticed during char creation that somehow the weight numbers seem to be in lbs. not kg (they fit with half the values (e.g. tall woman -> 70 kg). Even when taking the extra height evolution into account (I am tall and large and weigh around 110kg, not 220 :) ). I opened the printer friendly pdf, pages 11 and 12.

Hi Rob!

Super excited to try my first Icar game! But before that, do you have any guidance on writing Character Skeletons?

Also, you mention in the book that Scavenger ones are supposed to be underpowered, and I was wondering what would be a good way to make middle-of-the-road powered characters.

Looking forward to it, thanks!

Hi John,
I'm delighted to hear from you! I'll do my best to offer some advice.

If you're playing a Scavenger like setting then I would recommend taking the existing Skeletons and beefing them up by increasing the skill percentages that are rolled and giving everyone the ability to shoot a weapon.

More generally, I tend to make a group of Skeletons for a campaign in such a way that there is only a little bit of overlap. You tend to have a PC group of: the talking character, the hacker, the security and the engineer. That covers most bases.

Thank you so much for your comment, it does a huge amount of good and spurs me on to write more!

Is it possible to do a print version of the game? It will be very much appreciated!

Hi Thomas, thank you for you comment. It's been preying on my mind for about 5 years. Sadly not yet - because I'm not 100% happy with the game! When I complete version 5 (coming along nicely) then I will be offering a print version through a POD service.

I am happy for you to take it into a print shop to print it for personal - there is a message to the print shop owner at the bottom of the first page saying that it's OK to do (print shop owners are rightly suspicious, I had trouble printing one for personal use!).

I'd like a version that is under 25mb and is kindle friendly (plaintext instead of images)

Hi Otos, thanks for your feedback. I am working on a version 5 of all the documents. At that point, I will create a text only version.

Hi Rodrigo,
Thanks for getting back to me - did you manage to download it in the end? I cannot reproduce your problem. Have you tried DriveThruRPG support?

Thank you,
Rob

I'd really appreciate a easy-print version without the heavy page backgrounds.

Hi Mike, I have added a printer friendly version to the download. You should be able to get it from your account page.

Thanks again,

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
